Leaderboards1. Leaderboards

Leaderboards are an excellent way to run a contest or add an element of friendly competition. Since releasing this last week, we’ve added more: Text Boxes and RSS feeds for the Leaderboard page; a drag-and-drop interface; and the ability to exclude the Network Creator, Admins, and featured content from Leaderboards.

Check out the improvements.

Who’s #1? Install it and see.

1. From Settings, choose Features Layout.
2. Drag the Leaderboard module onto the Main Page layout — as you would any other module.
3. Experiment with the settings to display exactly what you need.

Read more about it.

Extend this power to others

This ability is already live for you as the Network Creator. Want to bestow this ability on others?

1. Navigate to Content, choose Controls.
2. Check the boxes under Edit Content Permissions to give your Administrators or Moderators the power to edit content.

How to make it yours.

Customizing it is easy

1. In Settings, click on Terms of Service and head straight for the large text box.
2. Anything you add will be displayed on your network’s Terms of Service page.

How to get the words out

1. Choose Content and then Controls.
2. Check the box to Enable Language Filtering.
3. Enter words you want to filter out. They’ll show up when posted on your network with one letter followed by asterisks (just like t***).

A Reminder That Laughter is the Best Medicine

Monday, August 30th, 2010

A friend of the couple who founded Home Instead Senior Care, Mary Maxwell was asked to give the invocation at the company’s 2009 Convention. Initially it seemed like a normal prayer, but it soon took a very funny turn. Her deadpan delivery and lines like …This is the first time I’ve ever been old… and it just sort of crept up on me … soon had the franchise owners rolling in the aisles. With the timing of a professional comedian, Mary shines a very funny light on the foibles of aging, to the delight of this audience of senior-care experts.

Download a copy of the poem, Blessed In Aging (PDF 275k), which Mary reads at the end of her prayer..

PLANNED DOWNTIME ON JULY 20TH FOR LAUNCH OF NEW PLANS

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Eric Suesz PLANNED DOWNTIME ON JULY 20TH FOR LAUNCH OF NEW PLANS

Ning Platform down for maintenance beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Time on July 20th (6:00 p.m. GMT). The maintenance may take up to two hours, after which Network Creators will be able to purchase the new plans and begin enjoying new features. Due to the nature of the maintenance, we may not be able to display individually branded maintenance pages. Networks will likely show a simple unbranded error message.

Click on the above title link, for more details about this upgrade and downtown issue on ning.com Website…

We apologize for the timing of this maintenance window. We scheduled it at this time for two important reasons. First, so we can stress-test the new code with full daytime traffic volume during the maintenance period. Second, we want to have every Ning engineer, product manager, and advocate on hand during the maintenance period and post-launch. Taking Ning Networks down is something we hate to do, but is critical in this important transition. We are committed to making the move to the new pricing plans as smooth as possible for you and your members.
Ongoing updates regarding this maintenance will be available on the Ning Status Blog.

A funny Story about Manholes

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010
this is kind of funny…

Computer scientists take on a classic New York hazard
Web edition : Wednesday, July 7th, 2010
font_down font_up Text Size
access

Look outThis manhole (yellow arrow) in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood was ranked 20th most likely to explode, smolder or catch fire out of the borough’s more than 50,000 manholes and utility service boxes. Its oldest cable was installed in the 1920s; several others were replaced after a burnout event in 2004. C. Rudin et al./Machine Learning 2010

Every so often in New York City, a disk of cast iron weighing up to 300 pounds will burst out of the street and fly as high as several stories before clattering back to the blacktop. Flames, smoke or both may issue from the breach, as if somebody had pulled hell’s own pop-top.

Manhole explosions aren’t just spectacular; they’re dangerous. As one firefighter observed after a manhole exploded near Times Square in May: “It’s not Disneyland, people. Get the hell out of the way.”

Ever since Thomas Edison fired up the city’s commercial electric grid in 1882, New Yorkers have had to contend with the random hazards of smoking, flaming and exploding manholes. Many of the blasts result from decrepit wiring, which can lead to sparks. Throw in a bit of gas and a confined space and, like a combustion engine, the blast can move metal. Until recently, there was no way of knowing where or when the next outburst would occur; repairs commenced only after a manhole had growled.

But in 2004 Con Edison began a proactive inspection program, with the goal of finding the places in New York’s snaking network of electrical cable where trouble is most likely to strike.

The company also called upon a team of Columbia University researchers for help in predicting which of New York City’s manholes might be the next to blow. Led by Cynthia Rudin, now at MIT, the scientists developed an algorithm that directs a computer to identify subterranean trouble spots. Now a report in the July issue of Machine Learning suggests the researchers are winning the battle of machine versus manhole.

“To us it was like solving an ancient puzzle, but one that we weren’t sure we were going to crack, and one that nobody had solved before,” Rudin says.

Rudin and her team tackled Manhattan first. Beneath the borough’s streets and avenues lies 21,000 miles of cable, enough to girdle more than three-quarters of the Earth.

The researchers set out to rank the manholes of Manhattan by vulnerability to serious events, such as fires and explosions. They had piles of historical data: Con Edison has records on its miles of cable dating back to the 1880s.The team also had 10 years worth of “trouble tickets” — more than 61,000 reports typed by dispatchers as they directed crews in the field.

Some tickets recorded relevant past events such as fires, explosions, smoking manholes or flickering lights. There was also a huge amount of irrelevant information, says Rudin: “Parking information for the Con Ed vehicle, or the fact that there is a customer that has a language problem, or other things like that.” Order had to be created from confusion, she says.

Knowing the past doesn’t necessarily mean you can predict the future, and Rudin wasn’t sure it could be done. Serious manhole events are rare — only a few hundred occur each year even though there are 51,000-odd manhole and service boxes in Manhattan.

“Finding a pattern when something is very rare is very hard,” says computer scientist Gary Weiss of Fordham University in New York City. “If you only have a few examples, there are so many patterns that can fit those few examples … you can’t really tell the difference between a pattern that is meaningful and one that is coincidental.”

The algorithm’s job was to “learn” from the past records and find meaningful patterns. Then it could predict the likelihood that a particular manhole with particular characteristics would have a future flare-up.

The researchers realized they had to take the long view. “We were not getting anywhere by trying to predict events in the short term,” says Rudin. They developed what they call a hot-spot theory. The team discovered that manholes with larger cables — and so a larger amount of insulation subject to decay and thus to sparking — turned out to be more vulnerable to serious events.

Con Edison blind-tested the team’s model by withholding information on a recent set of fires and explosions. The top 2 percent of manholes ranked as vulnerable by the algorithm included 11 percent of the manholes that had recently had a fire or explosion, Rudin notes.

Tweaking and adding more data has improved the model further, says Rudin, and Con Edison is now using it to help prioritize inspection and repairs on the grid. The team has just completed rankings for manholes in Brooklyn and the Bronx. And Rudin has plans to return to Manhattan’s grid, armed with the most recent inspection and repair data.

“I never really felt like a New Yorker, even though I lived there for several years,” says Rudin. “But contributing to the basic infrastructure of the city really helped somehow.”

EXPANDING ON NING MINI: A FEW NEW DETAILS ADDED BY REQUEST

EXPANDING ON NING MINI: A FEW NEW DETAILS ADDED BY REQUEST

EXPANDING ON NING MINI: A FEW NEW DETAILS ADDED BY REQUEST

We just published a blog post on the Ning Blog that I thought might interest Creators. It details a few changes we’ve made to the upcoming Ning Mini plan that you may like, including the addition of the ability to add Ning Apps with the Ning Mini plan. -E

++++

We’re getting closer to the launch of our new pricing plans on July 20th, and I’d like to take a few minutes to provide Network Creators with several additional details about the transition process for those of you who are interested in purchasing the Ning Mini plan.

We’ve heard a lot of feedback from Network Creators over the last two months. A number of you who are planning on choosing the Ning Mini plan expressed concern about what will happen to your customized CSS and Text Boxes, as well as what you should do if your membership level is currently above the 150 Ning Mini limit. We’ve been listening diligently, and based on your feedback have made a few adjustments to the Ning Mini plan that I think many of you will be happy to hear:

  • If you currently have between 151 and 400 members, you will still be able to choose the Ning Mini plan. However, you won’t be able to approve additional members until your membership level drops below 150. Your Members page will show the most recent 150 members. Note, if you have more than 400 members, you won’t be able to purchase Ning Mini. You will need to reduce your Ning Network to 400 members before selecting Ning Mini.

  • If you have customized your current network with CSS, JavaScript, or by making changes to the Language Editor, these changes will remain in place. However, since the Advanced Appearance Box, Analytics Box, and the Language Editor won’t be available to Ning Mini subscribers, you won’t be able to make further edits. You will be able to erase the CSS or JavaScript, or you can simply revert to the defaults built-in to the Language Editor, if you so choose.

  • Similarly, if you currently have more than three Text Boxes or one RSS feed on your Main Page, these will remain in place. However, you won’t be able to make edits until you have reduced the number of Main Page Text Boxes to three or RSS feeds to one.

  • Finally, we’d like Ning Mini subscribers to have the ability to install Ning Apps like our recently well-received revenue-generating apps. To help out on that front, Ning Mini subscribers will be able to install up to two Ning Apps.

Stay tuned to the
Announcement Page for updates, and let us know if we can help you choose the right plan. You can email us with your questions about the plans at planquestions@ning.com

The Road To Launch – Announcement Updates

Follow the improvements we’ve been making to the platform as we get closer to July 20th:

June 16

Plan Updates – Purchase Ning Plus or Ning Pro and get greater control over the design of your Ning Network.

  • Make almost unlimited changes to the appearance of your network with up to 100,000 characters of CSS in the Advanced Appearance Box (current limit is 15,000) and up to 20,000 characters of JavaScript or HTML code in the Analytics Box (current limit is 2,000).
  • Change the way members navigate your Ning Network. Remove or rename any tab except Manage, and add up to 50 top-level tabs (current limit is 14).

The Ning Pro Plan includes Premium Support. You’ll enjoy the following increased level of support:

  • Responses to your questions within 24 hours, Monday through Friday
  • Invitations to new release and upcoming feature calls

If you decide to purchase Ning Mini, we’ve made it easy to transition to the new product:

Your Member page will show the most recent 150 members. If you have more than 400 members, you won’t be able to purchase Ning Mini. You will need to reduce your Ning Network to 400 members before selecting Ning Mini.

  • Similarly, if you currently have more than 3 text boxes or 1 RSS feed on your Main Page, these will remain in place. However, you won’t be able to make edits until you have reduced the number of Main Page text boxes to 3 or RSS feeds to 1.
